<0.6: Normal
0.6–1.0: Normal to mildly elevated
1.0–1.4: Moderate shock — major haemorrhage risk
>1.4: Severe shock — immediate intervention
When to use
- Trauma — predicts massive transfusion requirement (SI >1.0)
- GI haemorrhage — guides urgent endoscopy decision
- Obstetric haemorrhage (Modified SI: normal <0.9 in pregnancy)
- Sepsis — early haemodynamic deterioration marker
